Advantages of a Steel Roof

Although the initial installed cost of asphalt shingles is typically lower, metal roofing has a lower life-cycle cost and offers several advantages over asphalt shingles, including:

  • Longevity — The expected lifespan of an asphalt shingle roof is only one-third or less of a properly installed metal roof.
  • Energy Efficiency — Studies show that metal roofing can reduce air-conditioning costs by reflecting sunlight and efficiently radiating heat to reduce heat flow into buildings.
  • Lighter Weight — Metal roofing weighs fifty-percent less than asphalt shingles, on average.
  • Durability — metal roofing is resistant to damage from hail, fire, and wind.
  • Excellent compatibility with solar panels.
  • Increased curb appeal and lasting home value.
  • Beneficial environmental impact and recyclability — While the Metal Roofing Alliance estimates that twenty billion pounds of asphalt shingles are dumped into U.S. landfills every year, there are no metal roofs in landfills — steel is the most recycled material on the planet!

Does metal roofing attract lightning?

Based on available studies, a metal roof does not increase the risk of lightning strikes, according to The Metal Construction Association’s Technical Bulletin, “Lightning Strikes and Metal Roofing”. Several factors can influence the probability of a lightning strike, including but not limited to the topography of the area, height, and size of the building, and the frequency or severity of thunderstorm activity.

Should I install lightning rods on a metal roof?

The addition of lightning protection rods or devices to reduce the likelihood of a lightning strike on a metal roof is up to the business or homeowner. Common options such as air terminals and conductor leads should be installed by qualified contractors. Learn more by reading The Metal Construction Association’s Technical Bulletin, “Best Practices in Lightning Protection and Metal Construction”.

Where are the most lightning strikes in the United States?

According to Vaisala Xweather’s Annual Lightning Report 2023, the Southeastern part of the United States sees the country’s greatest concentration of lightning strikes per km2.
